It is that time of year again and my 2012 Colby Brown Photography Wall Calendar is printed and on its way to my office. This year I have something special in store for everyone. Think of this collection as a selection of some of my favorite photographs from around the world.

On top of that, I am throwing in a free Photo Editing Video Tutorial for the first 200 people to purchase the calendar. This video will cover the step by step process of how I create some of my best images. Badwater Basin in Death Valley National Park has to be one of the most unique natural formation in the lower 48 States. Never in my life have I been so amazed by little crystalized salt. While others have been fortunate to find small glass like pools of water covering Badwater, I was forced to get as creative as I could with what was available. The above image was shot durring sunrise one morning in the park. In order to show off the extreme sharpness of my Zeiss 21mm ZE lens and give you a different viewpoint, I had to lay on my stomach and use my arms as a make shift tripod. I took three images and blended them in Adobe Photoshop so that I could pull the details out of all the major spectrums of light. I hope you enjoy this image as much as I enjoyed getting dirty taking it.

Located in the heart of Death Valley National Park in California, The Mesquite Flat Dunes are the most accessible sand dunes in the park. While the highest dune in this area is only 100 ft tall, a walk through the dunes makes them seem much larger. In the foreground of this image you see polygon-cracked clay from an ancient lakebed that has been known to form these unique designs in some of the low laying areas of the dunes. Looking closely, you should be able to spot the two individuals that were climbing this dune as I took this image. They allow for a beautiful sense of perspective in this vast landscape.

Death Valley National Park, located in the heart of California, has more unique geological phenomena’s then one could imagine. One of the most popular areas in certainly Badwater Basin. The natural formation of these amazing geometric designs is a sight to see. While most people head straight to the main entrence of the Badwater area, there are plenty of spots in other locations that have little to no crowds and still offer superb views. This image was made by manually blending 3 separate images with layers in Adobe Photoshop and then fine tuned with Adobe Lightroom.

Located in Death Valley National Park in California, the Mesquite Sand Dunes are certainly worth a visit. While the highest dune rises to only 100ft, the dunes themselves cover a fairly massive area…offering you an infinite amount of possibilities to get creative with your photography work. You will find crescent, linear and star shaped dunes in this area, according to the NPS Death Valley NP Website. While I only had one sunrise to capture these impressive dunes, I was fortunate to walk away with a lot of work that I was happy with. This is one of my favorite images of that morning. Enjoy!

The Racetrack playa in Death Valley National Park is one of the most unique locations in any of the National Parks in the US. This incredibly dry playa is known for the infamous “moving rocks” that seem to glide across the ground on their own. While conspiracy theorists love to point to Aliens, there are plenty of other plausible causes for these moving rocks, including the mixture of a dray playa, random downpours of rain and heavy winds that are known in the area. While the rocks themselves are the reason for this areas popularity, there are plenty of other beautiful things to capture when venturing out into the desolate region of the park.

I absolutely love it when I find myself completely blown away by nature. Living in Colorado and having an infatuation with mountains and cold weather, I am usually not one to enjoy photographing desert landscapes. That all changed once I got to Death Valley National Park this past March. Between the intense geologic color shifts, expansive landscapes and naturally formed designs (Badwater/Mesquite Sand Dunes)…I was like a kid in a candy store. This image was taken the one and only morning that I shot in the Mesquite Sand Dunes, located in the heart of Death Vally. Because of the rolling hills and the angle in which the sun rises, I was greated with some of the best shadows I have seen. While I have plenty more work to share from this one morning, this is certainly one of my favorites, mainly for its simplicity and symmetry. Enjoy!

Death Valley National Park in California is one of the most unique locations in the lower 48 states. Between the high mountains, below sea level desert heat, unique geologic features, massive sand dunes and salt flats….one couldn’t possibly see all the park has to offer in one trip. In March of this year, I spent 5 days exploring the park, documenting just about everything I possibly could. Certainly one of my favorite areas was Bad Water. This section of the park, which is actually below sea level, offers some of the most sought after locations for photography in the entire park. Salt crystallizations naturally form of the valley floor in incredibly beautiful designs. I ended up shooting here more then any other area and thus have a lot of photography work to share. Until then, enjoy this image of the early morning sun beginning to light up the morning sky. This photo is a blend of two images, allowing me to pull details from both the foreground and sky. Enjoy!

Throughout my professional photography career, I have always been attracted to the artistic feel of nature. From the veins of leaves, to the way light reflects off water, I have also found myself being drawn to these amazing characteristics of the world around us. As a photographer, it is hard not to love the artistic possibilites that come along with capturing the beauty of sand dunes. Between the smooth curved lines, dark shadows and intricate patterns…whats not to love? This image was shot one morning while shooting in the Mesquite Sand Dunes of Death Valley National Park. The soft morning light danced across the dunes, allowing the opportunity for me to capture the seen you see here. I opened up my aperture, probably more then I needed to, in order to keep as much in focus throughout the image as possible.
