Denver Colorado Photo Walk

Date: October 23rd, 2011
Time: 3:30pm – 7pm
Starting Location: City Park Parking lot (MAP HERE)

Join me, Colby Brown, as I host the first official Denver Colorado Photo Walk of 2011. We will start in the City Park Parking Lot at 3:30pm, make our way through downtown Denver, towards Union Station and then head towards the Capital building as the sun begins to set. We have great prizes from onOne Software, F-Stop Gear, Google, Phase One, Feisol and others to giveaway.

Who is this for?

This photo walk is for everyone. You do not have to be a professional photographer nor do you have to use Google+ in order to attend. We welcome all types of photographers from all types of backgrounds.

Mi Camera Mi Mundo Event in Denver

Tomorrow, October 8th 2011, Empowerment International will be holding a phenomenal photography event here in Denver, Colorado. EI focuses on bringing education to underprivileged youth in Nicaragua in an attempt to keep them off the streets and out of gangs in and around the Barrios outside Granada. One of their programs is teaching photography to these kids and this event is showcasing their photography work from their home country. All proceeds go back to the organization and these kids, allowing them to expand their programs and reach more children in need. I will be the keynote speaker for the event and I hope to see some of you there. This will also signify the official launch of “The Giving Lens“, which aims to blend photo education and giving back to local communities around the globe. The first photography workshop/humanitarian adventure will be to Nicaragua, working with the same aspiring photographers from this event.

Behind the Lens – Taking Advantage of an Opportunity

I feel that for many aspiring photographers, it is easy to get wrapped up in landing any paying gig, let along your first. I know I was no exception when I first started. But over the years, I learned the valuable tool of time management. Typically I find myself working in some of the most beautiful locations on the planet, often on another companies dime…which of course is the best way to travel When on assignment, assuming I have taken care of my responsibilities for the contract that I was hired for, I ALWAYS look for scenes that can help expand my own photography portfolio.

For example, I am currently wrapping up a contract with the Adams County Open Parks Department here in Denver, Colorado. They contacted me, asking me to capture 12 different locations around Denver that will be used in a free calendar for Adams County tax payers coming up in 2012. One of the locations I choose to shoot was Ken Mitchell Lake, located in North East Denver. This beautiful location was truly a pleasure to shoot. They built this beautiful fishing pier that faces the Rockies…pier, lake, mountains…certainly hard to not enjoy this scene.

However as the sun inched closer to the horizon for sunset, I was given a dazzling light show display and I couldn’t help myself. Since I always carry two tripods, so that I can have two different set ups ready to shoot at the same time, it was easy for me to pull out my Canon 70-200 2.8L IS II lens and grab this beautiful image of Longs Peak with great light dancing off the clouds above it (pictured below)

The LESSON OF THE DAY is to always be looking for creative ways to expand your profile and get images just for you, whether you are on contract, assignment or freelancing. It is easy to get wrapped up in the complexities of a shoot, but if you plan ahead for the possibility of capturing images for yourself, you won’t have to look back and shake your head at a missed opportunity.

* I should note that 9 times out of 10, I make sure that I always retain the copyright to not only the images I shoot on contract/assignment, but other images I shoot while on a paid job. This is not always possible, but certainly something I strive for.

The End Is Near – Storm Over Sunflower Fields

“The End Is Near” – Denver, CO 2011

Here in my home state of Colorado, we are known for our sunshine. In reality, we get more days of sun then either San Diego or Miami. However every summer, storms sweep in over the Rocky Mountains and at times, deliver some of the most dramatic light in this region of the US. This season, the sunflower fields have been exceptional and so every time I see a storm brewing, I make a b-line out to to some of my favorite fields to see what I can get. This photo is a double manual blend of 3 images. I used two images to blend the sky together and then touched up the foreground and blended it into the other two.

EXPOSURE: f / 8.0 at 1/120, 1/80th and 1/50th (Manual Blend)

The Super Moon Appears In The Colorado Night Sky

Over this past week it was hard to miss the news of the March 19 “Super Moon”. It was supposed to be the largest full moon in more then 18 years, although it didn’t turn out that way here in Colorado. The full moon was 221, 565 miles away, a 14% decrease in distance from the average. While I have seen images of the moon looking truly massive, here in Colorado that was not the case.

Regardless, my Wife, Dog and I had a great time documenting this “once every 18 year event”. Even once we realized that clouds were going to cover the moon as it peaked over the horizon, we made the best of the situation. I opened up my shutter speed and just had some fun. After looking at my photography work from last night, the “super moon”, almost looked like a sunrise, although there is certainly an erie feeling to the images that you can only get from night photography. I hope you enjoy!
