The Year of Adventure!

Monday, January 4th, 2010

As we all look back and reflect on 2009 (My Reflection), I believe that it is equally important to look forward to what 2010 will bring us. Despite global warming causing record lows in snow fall, the Canucks up North will be hosting the Winter Olympics for the 3rd time. Mean while South Africa is trying to prove to the world that not all countries in Africa are as backward as war torn Somalia by hosting the World Cup in Cape Town. Apple might finally release an iTable and the US might finally make significant Health Care reform and join the rest of the world in the 21st century.

However for me, it is going the be the year full of compassion and adventure. The year I go back to exploring this beautiful planet, the year I prove to the world that photography can make a difference and the year I document one of the most challenging human feats ever attempted. 2009 came and went in the blink of an eye and I can only assume 2010 will do the same. This is a brief outline of what to expect from Colby Brown Photography in 2010. Be sure to keep a close eye on the blog in the coming weeks for more in depth details from each of these projects.

Central America:

On January 10th I will depart for a 38 day exploration of Guatemala and Honduras. From the colonial architecture of Antiqua to the flowing lava fields of the Pecaya Volcano, the temple ruins of Tekal to the most amazing market in all of Central America in Chichitenango…Guatemala is a unique country that still offers travelers the ability to get off the beat path and find their own adventure far away from Tourists. Although I will be spending most of my time in Guatemala, I am also looking forward to exploring Honduras. My girlfriend, Sarah, and I will be spending a week shooting the beautiful tranquil beaches on the island of Roatan and then heading to the Copan ruins to celebrate Valentines Day.

The Giving Lens:

After returning from Central America, you will see the launch of “The Giving Lens” by March of 2010. What is The Giving Lens? At the end of 2009, I got together with a handful of other professional photographers with the idea of utilizing photography to help change the world. With the launch of our website, we plan on raising awareness and money for many of the growing challenges that face the population of this planet everyday. From child malnutrition to clean drinking water, we plan on tackling these issues head on through the artistic medians we know best, photography and journalism. In the coming days I will release plenty of information. Until then, please join our flickr group, facebook page and sign up for announcements by visiting our website.

Back to North America:

Durring the months of March and April, Sarah and I will be making trips back to The Great Sand Dunes National Park in Colorado as well as Yosemite National Park in California. We will explore some of California’s coast line near Point Reyes National SeaShore and make a trip up to Vancouver, BC in late March. We will utilize this time to photograph some of our favorite places, before I begin shooting my huge project of 2010.

The Global Triathlon:

On May 8th of 2010 I will embark on a photographic adventure that has never been matched. As lead photographer for “The Global Triathlon” I am tasked with documenting Daniel Martin’s almost super human attempt at circumnavigating the globe by the rules of a triathlon. I have already laid out the details in a previous post (HERE). Here is a small excerpt

“A few months after Daniel completed his last trip I received an email that detailed his next idea, The Global Triathlon. The email talked about a massive human undertaking…a circumnavigation of the globe through the various aspects of a triathlon. Daniel would swim across the Atlantic, from N.Y. to Breast, France. He would then bike through all of Europe and Russia. After crossing the Bering Straight, he would then hike, run through Alaska, Canada and back to N.Y. He talked of the dangers of such a trip and how he wanted this expedition to run on the professional level. As soon as he asked if I would be willing to document this incredible adventure, I was in. There is no way I could pass up the adventure of a lifetime. Over the past year, both of us have been working diligently on the planning and logistical aspects of this endeavor.”

The Roof of the World:

To top off the year, I will be heading back to my favorite place on Earth, the Himalayas. As Daniel crosses into Russia, I will have a 4-5 month break from documenting the expedition from which I will spend it climbing various peaks in Nepal. I will meet Sarah, my best friend and his girlfriend in Kathmandu after which I will guide all of us up to Everest Base Camp to celebrate Christmas in 2010.
