MONGOLIA IT IS

Monday, October 10th, 2011

I did a post earlier that asked if I should explore Guillin, China or Mongolia and it seems that Mongolia won fairly handily. I still really want to document Guillin, but Mongolia might be added to the list for 2012.

So far the travel schedule is:

Death Valley, Bolivia, Nicaragua, Israel/Palestine, Cambodia, Iceland, Alaska and now Mongolia. Most are workshops I am teaching, which I should add 5-8 small workshops in Colorado as well, for Fall Colors and Sunflowers and Spring time in RMNP.

2012 will be a good year…

NEW LENSES FROM ZEISS? YES PLEASE!

Friday, October 7th, 2011

Many of you know that my Zeiss 21mm Lens is my favorite lens in my arsonal. It is so sharp that as +Brian Matiash would say, it could kill a bear. So hearing that they are coming out with a 15mm f/2.8 and 25mm f/2.0, I can't help but get excited.

BEHIND THE LENS – CLIMBING PEAKS IN NEPAL

Thursday, October 6th, 2011

This past April, I spent 27 days documenting one of my favorite regions in the world. The Himalayas. This is a short video I took as I crossed over the Kongma La Pass in the Khumbu Region, home to Mt. Everest. This was taken at roughly 18,500 ft.

Who is coming with me on my next trip to the Himalayas? :)

BEHIND THE LENS: Listening to Your "Little Man" (or Woman)

Tuesday, October 4th, 2011

I just love this time of year in Colorado. Not only do we have some amazing mountain landscapes, but fall in CO is just to die for. Currently I am on a 6 day shooting fest of the San Juan Mountains, joining up on occasion with fellow photogs +Sarah Fischler and +Ron Coscorrosa. After making our way to Telluride, Sarah and Ron choose to head back to a location we were shooting earlier in anticipation of an incoming and the fact that the Telluride area was still partly green (as far as Aspen fall colors go). I ended up driving to one of my favorite spots on Last Dollar Road and decided to stick it out. In the end I was greeted with an EPIC 1 hour and 15 minutes of light. Sarah and Ron still came away with great work, but I am stoked that I stayed and listened to my gut.

Lesson of the Day….listen to your little man or woman. They may not always be spot on, but failing to listen to them can leave you wishing for that EPIC light that could have been.

BEHIND THE LENS: Avoiding the Crowds

Saturday, October 1st, 2011

Maroon Bells, Colorado is one of those iconic landscape scenes that is hard to escape NOT photographing it. Over the years I have learned to avoid the masses in order to maintain my sanity, but this is not always that easy. Maroon Bells in Fall is one of those situations. I know there will be way too many people there, but I can't help but want to try to capture something unique.

As I woke up at 5:45am this morning, after sleeping in my car, I pulled into the parking lot for Maroon Bells, only to be treated to what seemed like 100 photographers. As I got my gear ready, I tried to prepare myself for what was around the corner. Sure enough, EVERYONE was already lined up…however they were all bundled in the same spot. Shaking my head I moved past them all and continued to walk along the shore line. Eventually the lake takes a small bend and provides some privacy and seclusion. Not only can I almost ALWAYS find solitude in this spot, but the reflections in the water are usually 10x greater then at the foot of the lake, with the masses of other photographers.

Long story short, don't be afraid to explore. There are many beautiful places out there in the world that other people will want to document as well. Don't let that dissuade you, but instead consider it a challenge to overcome :)

Thursday, September 29th, 2011

I just had a phenominal conversation with +Elia Locardi, a great photographer and all around stand up guy. Looks like we are going to co-host a Cambodia / Angor Wat photo workshop next year.

Who wants to come along? :)

BEHIND THE LENS: Preparing for Colorado Fall Colors

Thursday, September 29th, 2011

It is that time of year again and Colorado is starting to light up. This year is incredibly busy for me with trips to Aspen, Telluride, Ouray, Grand Tetons and Great Sand Dunes NP. Throw in being a keynote speaker at an event here in Denver for an organization that teaches photography to impoverished kids in Nicaragua and a mystery trip (which I can not give any details about just yet) and you start to get an idea. BTW, this is all happening within 25 days.

Who needs sleep anyway?
