  • The largest owl on the planet
hunts without a sound.

The Great Grey Owl – the Phantom of the North. Five feet of wingspan, facial discs that funnel sound like satellite dishes, and feathers engineered for silent flight. When this one locked eyes with me in Eastern Canada, the forest went completely still.

Some encounters you photograph. Some you just stand there and feel lucky.

  • 66.8 megapixels changes how you see wildlife 🤯

This is a single frame from my
a7R VI + 100-400mm GM up in
Katmai - and the deeper you punch in, the more the details you find. Individual hairs, water droplets, texture on this sockeye salmon's eye. This is why resolution matters in the field for wildlife photographers.

What's the most detailed shot you've ever taken? 👇

  • Did you know elephants can hear with their feet? 🐘

Deep rumbles travel for miles through the savanna floor, and elephants detect them through the sensitive pads of their feet a hidden conversation happening right beneath us. Spending time with these giants in Africa never gets old. There's always another layer to discover that makes them that much more fascinating!

What's the most surprising animal fact you know? Finger 👇

  • There's nothing quite like summer in Alaska alongside the brown bears of Katmai.

Three weeks, one coastline, and more close encounters than one can count! The variety of interactions found here is incredible! Photographing during bear season in Alaska never gets old. That's exactly why I keep coming back!

Which frame is your favorite -1 through 7?

A momma brown bear and her cubs at a hidden gem of a location...

Sockeye Salmon start to turn red as they begin to die and rot, making them incredibly photogenic in the process.

Fast shutter speeds are needed for these Brown Bears

Yesterday I posted a reel about a rare white Brown Bear Cub I spotted at Funnel Creek this year. Such an incredible sight to see in person!

How close do we get to the bears you ask? There is such an abundance of food in this part of Alaska, the bears don't think of you as a threat. This is unique to this part of Alaska...don't try this with a normal grizzly bear!

Which image is your favorite? Let me know below...
  • This Bear season up in Alaska, two white brown bear cubs were spotted in two different areas, from two different mothers. One in Brooks Falls (that was more white/silver) and this one at Funnel Creek. While the term "Ghost" or "Spirit" bears are reserved for white black bears with recessive genetic traits found in the Great Bear Rainforest in Canada, it is rare to find nearly white brown bears, let alone two in a single season. As they age, these two bears will surely change the color of their fur, but seeing both in person was an incredible experience for myself and my workshop clients.

  • When it comes to working with Brown Bears in Alaska...patience is always vital! I could watch these bears hunt for salmon all day long...every day...each summer..year after year!

  • There’s nothing quite like summer in Alaska alongside the brown bears of Katmai!

With salmon numbers considerably lower this year, the bears were constantly working the tidal flats and rivers —delivering non-stop action and even better opportunities for our workshop crew.

Here’s is a quick selection of some of my favorites so far. Which shot do you like the most?

  • I am very excited to introduce the brand new Sony 100-400 f/5.6-8 telephoto lens. This lightweight, sharp and affordable telephoto lens is a great option for wildlife photographers that are just getting into the field. I took this lens with me to Brazil to photograph the amazing wildlife in the Pantanal region and it absolutely did NOT disappoint! Enjoy this small selection of images taken with this lens!

  • Every summer I end up spending multiple weeks in Alaska exploring more of the Katmai, Lake Clark and Brooks regions in search of the incredible Alaska Coastal Brown Bear. Next week I head back to Alaska to continue this tradition to lead two incredible groups of photographers. This year I am also helping out my friend @charlesglatzer , after his tragic passing, by helping run his Alaska tours for his family. I can't think of a better way to pay tribute to an old friend than by taking care of his groups in one of his favorite places on the planet. Chas...you will be missed!
