Welcome to
Colby Brown Photography
I became a photographer back in 2006, rapidly rising in the ranks of the photo industry. I created my company, Colby Brown Photography, to offer my services to the public and corporations. I spent countless hours studying the latest photography techniques, exploring camera technology and photo editing. This learning curve opened my eyes to the world of photography education by exploring the world and using these techniques in the field.
I was leading photography workshops for National Geographic in South America, further spurring my love for both travel and photo education. Over the years, I have developed photography workshops that take you to wondrous locations around the globe while teaching the different disciplines of photography. Each workshop is carefully planned to offer the best scenic locations to create memorable adventure while allowing me to share my knowledge and experience.
Today, I am a professional photographer, photo educator and author living in Eastern Pennsylvania with my family. The meticulously researched photography workshops I created, specialize in landscape, travel and wildlife photography, I am fortunate to work all over the globe, across all 7 continents, documenting various cultures, environments and species in pursuit of capturing life on this planet. Following my heart and my passions, I dedicate a lot of my time to working with small NGOs, charities and initiative programs while on the road. If you have been looking for a way to give back, check out my NGO, The Giving Lens. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out and contact me. Thanks for stopping by! Enjoy!

Another meticulously organized workshop from Colby Brown in Bolivia! Experienced, responsible and helpful drivers of appropriate vehicles, excellent local guide, best available accommodation along with Colby’s vast experience of all things people and photography made for a first class experience.
The workshop was centered around astrophotography in the Salar de Uyuni with an additional trip to the high(…)
altitude southern part of the Bolivian altiplano near the border with Chile. Most people had acclimatized to the 14,000 feet Salar by the time we ventured even higher so that most negative effects were kept to a minimum – also due to not having to hike great distances to reach shooting locations. The workshop offered the opportunity for a wide variety of photography from drone, people and street (in La Paz and Uyuni), wildlife in and around Laguna Colorada as well as landscape with some amazing light at both ends of the day.
Bolivia is not easy to travel to from the USA and the entry and exit requirements are cumbersome and bureaucratic but it was an excellent week spent with friends that produced a high number of photographic keepers.
I would suggest nobody else sign up for this workshop so that we keep these locations secret for as long as possible!

Costa Rica is a tropical forest filled with fabulous birds and wildlife. The temperatures during our tour In January 2025 were warm and humid with frequent showers, so bring rain gear for both you and your equipment. The people of Costa Rica are warm, welcoming and most speak English. Our accommodations were lovely, clean, spacious and all air conditioned. Food choices are many, varied and excellent. (…)
All in all, a wonderful country to explore and photograph. The main focus of our tour were birds, frogs and snakes with a few mammals along the way. Our tour leader, Colby Brown, our bus driver, Wilson, and our guide Kenneth Martinez, were incredible the entire trip. All three were available at all times for questions, suggestions, assistance with luggage or equipment, jokes, hugs and smiles. Due to unusually heavy rains one of our planned hotels was inaccessible as the road had washed out in several places and within 5 minutes we were on our way to a new hotel (which was quite lovely) and new photographic stops. It says a lot about a tour leader/group that can pivot so seamlessly and quickly when conditions take a turn for the worst.
As to the photography portion of the tour – it was exceptional! Every stop except one was an abundance of opportunity to photograph quetzals, hummingbirds, toucans, tanagers, water birds, cara cara, and many small birds. Colby was always near at hand for advice about composition, settings, issues with equipment, information on the birds. The one exception was the last day of our tour when we went in search of a leucistic toucan that had been spotted but failed to turn up for us – which is not uncommon when searching for an extremely rare bird. The last three days of our tour we focused on macro photography. For many of us it was a totally new experience and a good one. Colby held a class one evening explaining the differences between taking macro images vs the fast moving birds we had been photographing. The next day we had an entire day with Colby and crew setting up various branches/leaves/logs for us to photograph frogs and snakes that were caught in the forest around us. It was exciting, exhilarating and amazing. We learned how to use off camera flash with soft boxes, multiple soft boxes while all the time closely guarded by Colby and staff to assure we were in no danger.
All in all it was a truly marvelous tour with great photographic opportunities, memories and new found friends.

My week-long Alaska bear photography workshop with Colby Brown Photography was nothing short of extraordinary. If you want a true, untamed wilderness experience, this is the trip to book. Every day began with an incredible adventure: we boarded a small Cessna floatplane for an hour-long flight over breathtaking scenery to reach our remote photography locations, returning to the lodge the same way at the end(…)
of the day. Because the long Alaskan daylight hours gave us flexibility, we could adjust our daily schedule around the tides and the bears to optimize our photography opportunities. The bear encounters themselves were magical. Because the bears were solely focused on feeding, we had the unique opportunity to get safely up close to these beautiful creatures. We were incredibly lucky to see a lot of new cubs with their mothers, and captured stunning frames of bears catching salmon, playing in the sedge grass, and digging up clams on the mudflats. Best of all, we were the only group at most locations. There was zero fighting for spots or crowding from other tourists; we had total freedom to position ourselves perfectly according to the bears’ movements. Between the long shoots, returning to the lodge was a treat. The accommodations are highly comfortable, and the staff were all amazing, friendly, and truly went above and beyond to ensure we had a wonderful time. The food was absolutely delicious, and there was always plenty of it to refuel after a long day. I highly recommend this workshop for any active wildlife lovers looking for a real wilderness experience while still enjoying comfortable accommodation and good food. For anyone planning this trip, here is some practical advice:
Assess your fitness: This is the most physical photography workshop I have been on. Be prepared for a few kilometers of hiking across difficult, uneven, wet, and muddy terrain, as well as wading through rivers.
Pack smart for the field: On some days, you will be standing in mud or deep water and cannot put gear down, meaning you will have to keep your heavy backpack on for most of the shoot.
Bring a tripod: It was incredibly helpful for stability during the long periods when we stopped to observe and shoot the bears.
Layer up: The Alaskan weather was highly changeable, and we experienced a bit of everything. Pack clothing for all eventualities!
This workshop is worth every penny and delivers a flawless, immersive, and deeply rewarding adventure that I will never forget. I cannot recommend it highly enough!
