Welcome to
Colby Brown Photography
I became a photographer back in 2006, rapidly rising in the ranks of the photo industry. I created my company, Colby Brown Photography, to offer my services to the public and corporations. I spent countless hours studying the latest photography techniques, exploring camera technology and photo editing. This learning curve opened my eyes to the world of photography education by exploring the world and using these techniques in the field.
I was leading photography workshops for National Geographic in South America, further spurring my love for both travel and photo education. Over the years, I have developed photography workshops that take you to wondrous locations around the globe while teaching the different disciplines of photography. Each workshop is carefully planned to offer the best scenic locations to create memorable adventure while allowing me to share my knowledge and experience.
Today, I am a professional photographer, photo educator and author living in Eastern Pennsylvania with my family. The meticulously researched photography workshops I created, specialize in landscape, travel and wildlife photography, I am fortunate to work all over the globe, across all 7 continents, documenting various cultures, environments and species in pursuit of capturing life on this planet. Following my heart and my passions, I dedicate a lot of my time to working with small NGOs, charities and initiative programs while on the road. If you have been looking for a way to give back, check out my NGO, The Giving Lens. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out and contact me. Thanks for stopping by! Enjoy!
Each year I run photography workshop adventures around the globe in some of the most incredible locations on the planet such as Patagonia, Iceland, Norway, Cuba, Africa and much more…
Throughout my career I have created a number of tutorials, video courses & e-books that cover everything from social media and business to post-processing (Adobe, Capture One & On1 Photo RAW). You can find these in the Photography Education section of this website.

I saw his name on the internet, took a leap of faith, & immediately sent my deposit for the 2023 trip to Brazil. I had never met Colby before this trip but, wow, did I luck out with meeting him, traveling with him, learning from him. Luckily, most of the guests shoot with the same camera(s) (Sony) & even though I have been able to get decent shots before Brazil, Colby taught me how to get so much more out of(…)
my cameras. He is so knowledgeable, so patient, so friendly & kind (& even funny!)I am so happy to be an “alumnus” – I have not even been home a week yet & even though I have been there before, I booked a trip to Uganda with him, knowing that I will have a great experience & learn so much more!

Attending a photography tour can be a momentous experience. When you live on the opposite side of the world as I do, the expense and hours of travel mean that a lot is expected from a week on location. When the weather works against you, it’s hard to get up each day and try to find interesting compositions in the restricted conditions – particularly when you know that hiding behind the clouds and rain is(…)
some glorious scenery that you may never get the chance to be near again. Unfortunately, this year’s Dolomite photo workshop was very affected by the weather and my expectations for a week in the Dolomites were nowhere near realised.Managing expectations against reality is an important skill for all photographers – so that challenge, I accept. There were though, other challenges to expectations that required managing that I did not expect. The advertising for the workshop as a “Colby Brown photo tour” implied that Colby would be one of the leaders. In reality, this tour was led by his delegates. Having long admired Colby’s work, I was looking forward to spending time with someone of his experience; so, this was the first change to be navigated. Now, another person whose work I have long looked-up-to is Ugo Cei. A week with Ugo, who knows the Dolomites like the back of his hand, seemed a fantastic opportunity. My imagining was that his intimate knowledge of the Dolomites would afford participants an opportunity to explore and discover unique compositions, using his specialist experience. However, it turned-out that Ugo was largely the ‘bus driver’ following a pre-planned itinerary that seemed to be set by someone else. It may suit beginner photographers to be taken to as many “Instagram-famous’ sites as possible. For me, I was not so interested in taking the same photo as a million other people. I think we saw more dramatic scenes along the way that were worthy of a photographer’s eye than rushing on to a crowded attraction. Nevertheless, I did get a dozen new images of the Dolomites. As I edit them, I’ll upload them to my website
Having been on a few really excellent photo tours, I have come to expect that time is spent getting to know what each participant wants from the experience and how they want to grow their skills and vision. On this tour, there was no group discussion to start the workshop, and no attempt during the workshop to foster collaboration, review and education. This left a vacuum that vocal individuals of lesser experience tried to fill. For me, there was a lack of leadership that resulted in few opportunities for learning. Certainly though, the leaders put time into helping people with only basic post-processing skills to get better results from their images.
My expectations weren’t met. But I take it on me to do more homework to ensure I know exactly what I’m signing-up for. Colby Brown workshops seem likely to be valuable experiences for the beginning photographer, or someone who wants to be taken to the popular spots.

I loved this workshop, here is why;Colby Brown, and his co-leader, assistant Peyton Hale are amazing human beings, dependable, efficient, prompt, kind, funny, hopeful, and adept planners and problem solvers and did I say amazing photographers and teachers.Colby from the first second I emailed him was immediately responsive, available and a helpful guide and continued all the way through. He was indefatigable(…)
in finding us beautiful light and places to photograph. He taught me to pitch a tent in under 5 minutes and was available on all sites for an immediate consultation on composition, technique, art. He and Peyton , even went out of their way to find me gluten free lactose free vegan ice cream for my birthday in the outer lands of Iceland. They cared completely about our safety and well being, and when a fellow photographer fell ill and then fortunately better, they facilitated prompt and good medical care for him .They had a schedule that was flexible enough so if one needed some personal space to explore on one’s own , one could have that oppotrunity in all of the sites that we photographed.
For me, it was a gift to sleep outdoors next to rushing water falls, birds singing, sheep sighing, wind rustling and then get up to photograph. Iceland has vast immense beauty, grace, ruggedness, yet sublime elegance all of which was able to be seen and felt with the expert guidance of Colby Brown and Peyton Hale. I had dreamed of going to Iceland since childhood, and Colby helped me finally bring such a dream come to fruition.I am grateful to have experienced both subtle and dramatic light on this beautiful island and have captured images that will lift my spirit for many years as I remember the wonderful memories and the wonderful people that I met. And most importantly I met the finest of people in Colby and Peyton and have a deep love for Iceland which I hope to return to many times.
I would love to join Colby in other photographic adventures that he guides in other places on this beautiful planet, our home, Earth.
