Puma of Patagonia Photography Workshop
- The workshop begins in Punta Areans, Chile. For more details on recommended arrival and departure times, please refer to the FAQ section below.
- During this workshop, we will have four full days of guided Puma tracking in a private estancia on the edge of Torres del Paine National Park in Chile.
- After those four days with the Pumas, our group spends an extra two full days exploring more of Torres del Paine National Park, with opportunities to capture the region’s incredible landscapes at sunrise and sunset while continuing to look for wildlife during the day.
- In addition to the Puma, we will also look for the Andean Fox, Guanaco, southern crested caracara, austral pygmy owl, Andean Condor, and much more.
- Designed for photographers of all skill levels, from beginners to seasoned professionals, our team provides hands-on field instruction tailored to your needs. We’ll help you master your camera’s autofocus tracking and settings across dynamic scenarios, ensuring you’re fully prepared to capture the wide range of natural puma behaviors we encounter in the field.
- Scheduled for June, this workshop coincides with late autumn and early winter, giving us the exciting possibility of photographing pumas against a fresh blanket of Patagonian snow. While winter conditions vary year to year, capturing the striking contrast of a puma moving across a snow-covered landscape is an unforgettable highlight.

F.A.Q
While there are other photo tours in Patagonia, our workshop is intentionally designed from the ground up to give you the highest possible success rate in the field while prioritizing ethical tracking and personal instruction:
Exclusive Private Estancia Access: Rather than being restricted to public roads and crowded lookouts in the national park, we base our tracking on expansive private estancias bordering Torres del Paine. This grants our small group privileged off-trail access and the freedom to track and photograph wild pumas on foot in their natural territory.
Top Local Trackers & Low Client-to-Guide Ratio: We work side-by-side with experienced, dedicated puma trackers who read the terrain and wildlife patterns daily, putting us in prime position for dynamic hunting, stalking, and family interactions without disrupting the cats’ natural behavior.
Intimate Group Size (Strictly Capped at 5): With a strictly limited group size and two photo instructors on hand, you never have to compete for angles or instruction. You get extensive one-on-one time in the field to refine everything from advanced autofocus tracking and action framing to low-light exposure.
Over a Decade of Patagonian Experience: Having explored and led photographic expeditions throughout Southern Patagonia for more than 15 years, I know this region’s microclimates, changing light conditions, and logistical challenges inside and out.
The Full Patagonian Experience: We don’t just focus on big cats. We combine four dedicated days of puma tracking with two full days exploring the iconic landscapes and varied wildlife of Torres del Paine National Park at prime sunrise and sunset hours.
Free Sony Loaner Gear Program: As a Sony Artisan of Imagery, qualified US residents can test-drive up to two high-end bodies or telephoto lenses completely free of charge during the adventure.
The workshop begins on June 3rd, 2027, at 9am in Punta Arenas, Chile (PUQ Airport Code). You most likely will want to arrive a day early to help you deal with any jet lag from your travels. On June 10th, 2027, the workshop concludes around 2 pm in Punta Arenas.
It is also possible for you to fly into the Puerto Natales Airport (PNT Airport code) in Chile. This is 3 hours closer to Torres del Paine National Park. If you can find a flight that works with your schedule, we can pick you up in Puerto Natales on the way to our hotel later on June 3rd. Please reach out and let me know if you have any questions!
** Before you purchase any flights, please double-check with us to make sure the flight times line up with our schedule.
For this workshop, we are fortunate to stay in the same hotel throughout our time in Patagonia. We stay at the Hotel Estancia El Ovejero in Cerro Castillo for 7 nights.
While most things are covered when it comes to this workshop, your lunches and dinners are not included. Both can be purchased from our hotel in Cerro Castillo. Lunches will be boxed lunches since we want to maximize our time in the field looking for Pumas. Dinners will be buffet style back at our hotel each night.
June marks early winter in Southern Patagonia, bringing crisp, cool days, frosty mornings, and far calmer conditions than the notoriously windy summer months.
Temperatures: Daily highs typically hover between 35°F and 45°F (2°C to 7°C), while early mornings and nights often dip below freezing, generally between 20°F and 30°F (-6°C to -1°C).
Winds & Atmosphere: One of the biggest advantages of running this trip in June is the wind. Patagonia’s infamous gale-force summer winds subside significantly in winter, providing much calmer, clearer air that is ideal for stable telephoto shooting and tracking wildlife on foot.
Precipitation & Snow: Conditions can shift quickly between crisp blue skies, passing rain squalls, and snowfall. Early winter brings a genuine possibility of tracking pumas against fresh snow, though frozen ground, light frost, or dry steppe conditions are equally common.
Clothing Strategy: Dressing in technical, breathable layers is essential. You will want a thermal base layer, an insulating mid-layer (fleece or down), and a completely windproof and waterproof outer shell. Sturdy, insulated waterproof hiking boots, warm gloves with dexterity for operating camera dials, and a fleece beanie are vital for staying comfortable while tracking in the field.
his workshop involves a moderate physical fitness level. Tracking on private estancias allows us to navigate the vast terrain in spacious 4×4 vehicles to locate cats efficiently. Once a puma is spotted, however, they often begin moving across the steppe, ridge lines, or valleys, at which point we track them on foot.
You should be comfortable walking and carrying your camera gear across uneven terrain for distances of 1 to 2 miles per encounter. Pumas are the only apex big cats on Earth that can be ethically and safely photographed on foot at eye level—and putting in that short trek is precisely how you capture intimate, portfolio-defining images.
The workshop tuition listed above is based on double occupancy (shared rooms). If there is availability for a single room at the workshop, the additional cost is USD 1,000. This is available on a first-come, first-served basis and is contingent upon room availability hotel in Cerro Castillo.
While this workshop is laser-focused on tracking and photographing wild pumas, we also dedicate time to Patagonia’s iconic, rugged landscapes. Because pumas naturally maintain a comfortable buffer, a telephoto lens reaching 400mm to 600mm (or a prime with teleconverters) is essential for framing tight portraits and dynamic action without crowding the cats. For sweeping sunrises, glacial peaks, and environmental wildlife compositions, a 16–35mm wide-angle or 24–70mm mid-range zoom will serve you best.
You are of course free to bring any camera you have, but as a Sony shooter, I will be using the following camera gear:
- Sony a1 II (1)
- Sony a7R VI
- Sony 100-400 f/4.5 GM II
- Sony 600mm f/4 GM
1.4 TC & 2X TC - Sony 24-70 f/2.8 GM II
