F.A.Q
Absolutely! Although I might be a bit biased 😉 While there are numerous photography workshops available in places like Alaska, few offer a similar experience. With us, you get five full days of our fly-in/fly-out experience, which covers over 120 potential destinations in the Katmai region via multiple float planes. Each day, our team tracks the location and activity of the bears, allowing us to change our daily itinerary on the fly.
In addition to all of this, I have not only been working as a photo workshop instructor for 18 years, which has included leading trips for National Geographic, but I have also spent over 10 years exploring the Southern Patagonian region of South America. I work hard to ensure that I meet each of my clients at their level, providing ample one-on-one time while we are out in the field. This helps ensure that you get the most out of this workshop experience.
This workshop begins on July 4th, 2026, at noon near the Anchorage Airport (ANC airport code). You most likely will want to arrive a day early to help you deal with any jet lag from your travels. On July 9th, 2026, the workshop concludes around 9 pm in Anchorage, Alaska.
** Before you purchase any flights, please double-check with us to make sure the flight times line up with our schedule.
Yes, this workshop requires you to take a charter flight from Anchorage to the small village of Iliamna, AK. This comes with an additional cost of around $650. The exact price will be confirmed closer to the workshop’s start date.
Yes, outside of the workshop’s tuition fees, and the additional cost of the charter flight ($650), all of your meals are included at our lodge. Gourmet chefs will prepare each meal, taking into account your food preferences and allergies.
In Alaska, even in the Summer, you can expect the weather to vary wildly. On average, you can expect temperatures ranging from the mid-40s to the low 80s°F. You should always be prepared for rain, so don’t forget your rain jacket!
On average, mosquitoes are generally not a significant issue, but I do recommend bringing bug spray just in case.
While this workshop is not overly physically challenging, we never know exactly where the bears will be at a given location. Since we have over 120 different possible destinations, some spots may require additional walking or hiking to reach the best viewing angles. You should be able to walk over uneven ground for 1-2km if needed while carrying your camera gear.
The workshop tuition listed above is based on double occupancy (shared rooms). If there is availability for a single room at the workshop, the additional cost is USD 1,500. This is available on a first-come, first-served basis and is contingent upon room availability at our lodge in Ilianma, AK.
With this photo workshop, we are laser-focused on photographing Alaskan Coastal Brown Bears. In many situations, we will have very close access to bears. You will want to have a lens with a range of 70mm to 400mm. With a teleconverter, extending the range to 600mm could be worthwhile.
I will be bringing the following:
Sony a1 II (2)
Sony 70-200 f/2.8 GM II
Sony 300mm f/2.8 GM
1.4 TC & 2X TC

Testimonials

This workshop with Colby was like watching National Geographic unfold in real-time — only better, because we had front row seats and amazing guides making sure we didn’t become part of the food chain.
But the real secret sauce? The people. Our group of(...)
photographers was like a bear-loving, adventure-chasing comedy troupe. Every day was full of laughter, inside jokes, and enough shared snacks to survive a mild apocalypse. And the family and crew who ran the camp? Absolute legends. They made us feel welcome, safe, and totally spoiled in the middle of the Alaskan wilderness — which is not an easy feat when you’re surrounded by creatures that could you make you their next energy bar. This workshop gave me unforgettable moments and great memories. I came for the wildlife and the epic scenery… but I left with a full heart, sore abs from hiking and laughing, and a new adventure family. There’s also a boot hole named after me in the mud somewhere on mile two, but that’s a story for another day. Bring some Dramamine, Aspercreme, a walking stick , a raincoat and room for great food as Chef Callum fed us crazy great meals like we were going into our own hibernation.
Cheers

I had been delaying a trip to Alaska because I was overthinking the details and wasn’t sure of the best places to go for brown bear photography. A spot opened up for Colby’s “Alaskan Brown Bears” workshop and I jumped on it. The trip turned out to be fantastic!(...)
We were able to photograph a lot of bears (over 30 in one location) under the best conditions. Colby knows all the optimal places to go and has a great relationship with the lodge owners who treat everyone so well and make you feel like part of the family. Every day was an adventure as we headed out to the most bear dense locations by float plane. The itinerary is flexible to maximize viewing opportunities in case the bears are in unexpected locations. Colby, the lodge owners and guides are all so passionate about making sure you have the best trip possible. I did not know any of the other group members when we started but by the end I felt like I’d made some great new friends. It was a fun group to adventure with and hang out and collaborate with at the end of each day. Hiking through the Alaskan wilderness was amazing and the view of the landscapes from the float planes was beyond beautiful. If you want to experience the magnificence of Alaska all while photographing and filming the largest coastal brown bears on earth this is the trip to take!
This about sums up my last three unforgettable adventures with Colby—and this one was equally amazing! This was the 11th workshop I signed up for with Colby and he didn’t disappoint! We journeyed to Katmai National Park and Preserve in Alaska, right in time for(...)
the legendary salmon run. The main event? Brown bears galore—from massive adults to playful young cubs, fishing (or at least trying to) in the rushing rivers. Some were skilled “fisherbears” ; others… let’s just say their technique was a work in progress. It was equal parts inspiring and hysterical. What made this workshop stand out was the daily travel by seaplane to reach remote bear-viewing areas. These flights offered jaw-dropping aerial views of Alaska’s vast wilderness—snow-capped peaks, glacial valleys, sparkling lakes, and even the occasional moose wandering on the beach. Simply breathtaking. Our first major stop was the iconic Brooks Falls, where we hoped to catch the classic shot of a bear snatching a leaping salmon mid-air. Before that, we had to attend “bear school”—a mandatory orientation that covers safety protocols, bear behavior, and what to do if one decides to cross your path (hint: it will happen). Safety is serious business, so don’t miss this orientation plus you get a nice bear pin. Thanks to Colby’s permit, we had rare access to walk along the riverbanks, which made for incredible photo opportunities. At times, we were surprisingly close—but always under the watchful eye of Colby/experience guides. Not once did I feel unsafe. We stayed at the Alaska Wilderness Adventure Lodge, which was exceptional. Cozy accommodations, top-notch service, and they provided all the necessary gear—waders, boots, and more. The food? Incredible!!!. They have chefs on staff who catered to dietary restrictions in our group without missing a beat. Every meal was delicious.Colby this was another once-in-a-lifetime experience!! “I Will Be Back”
