F.A.Q

WHY SHOULD I JOIN YOUR MADAGASCAR WORKSHOP?

While there are a number of photography workshops being offered in places like Madagascar, none of them offer a similar experience. Not only have I been working as a photo workshop instructor for 18 years, which included time leading trips for National Geographic, but I have also spent over 15 years exploring Africa and countries like Madagascar. I work hard to make sure I meet each of my clients at their own level, providing ample 1 on 1 time while we are out in the field. This helps to make sure that you get everything possible out of this workshop experience!

ARRIVAL & DEPARTURE DETAILS

This workshop starts on September 15th, 2025, in Antananarivo, Madagascar (TNR). This is an arrival day, so you are free to arrive at any time. We will have a group dinner this first night at our hotel.

The workshop ends on September 28th when we return to Antananarivo. If you can find a flight out late on the 28th, that could work; otherwise, it might be best to stay around for an extra night and fly home the following day.

** Before you purchase any flights, please double-check with us to ensure the flight times align with our schedule.

DO YOU NEED A VISA TO ENTER MADAGASCAR?

Depending on which country you are from, you might need a visa to enter Madagascar. US citizens are allowed to purchase a visa on entry into the country at the airport. You can pay for your visa with CC.

WHAT ABOUT BRINGING CASH OR CREDIT CARDS?

When spending money in Madagascar, you mostly have to worry about snacks, gifts, and tips for local guides.

You can use an ATM at the airport on arrival or one of the many currency exchange shops in the customs terminal. Having some local currency on hand is excellent for small tips for local guides, but our leading guide and driver can be tipped in US dollars at the end of the trip.

Reach out if you have any other questions about this…

DO YOU OFFER WORKSHOP EXTENTIONS?

Please let us know if you want to visit other parts of Madagascar before or after our adventure. We can help you book some of these additional activities. To learn more about costs and ask questions about these workshops, please send us an EMAIL.

WHAT KIND OF WILDLIFE WILL WE SEE?

Madagascar is full of incredible wildlife you can’t find in other parts of the world. There are over 112 different species of lemur and over 100 species of chameleons found in Madagascar. Our focus will be on the Eastern and Central regions of the Island.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT IN TERMS OF THE WEATHER?

Madagascar, in September/October, has a reasonably mild climate. You can expect temperatures to range from 65F to 90F. Small rain showers are possible but not super common this time of year.

HOW DIFFICULT IS THIS WORKSHOP?

This workshop is not difficult, but we will do some light walking/hiking through the forests and jungles at each of our destinations to find amazing creatures to photograph.

HOW MUCH DOES A SINGLE SUPPLEMENT ROOM COST?

The workshop tuition listed above is based on double occupancy (shared rooms). If there is availability for a single room for the workshop, the cost is $1250 USD extra. This is a first come first serve basis and is based on room availability at our hotels in both Chile & Argentina.

WHAT CAMERA GEAR SHOULD I BRING?

Madagascar is an incredible destination full of wildlife. You will want to make sure you bring a macro lens in order to photograph the many different species of chameleons, geckos, and frogs found throughout the country. In addition, a 70-200 f/2.8 and a 100-400mm lens will cover most of the lemur and bird species we will also come across.

In Colby’s gear bag you will find the following…

Sony a1
Sony 24-70 f/2.8 GM II
Sony 70-200 f/2.8 GM II

Sony 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 GM

While a tripod is not very useful in Madagascar, you might want to bring a monopod to help you hold your larger lenses for more extended shooting sessions.

The 2018 Patagonia workshop was the first with Colby, and I did not go home disappointed. I have taken many workshops before, but this was the most educational and fun ever. I just wish the PUMA that Colby has ordered showed up 🙂
